The National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University have come out tops in this year’s Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2016.

2016-THE-Uni-Rankings

Just days after the Quacquarelli Symonds University Rankings: Asia were released, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have once again topped an international university rankings table.

NUS has been named the best university in Asia in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2016, while NTU is in joint second place with China’s Peking University. These are the highest positions for the two Singapore-based institutions in the rankings’ four-year history.

China and Japan have the highest density of top institutions in the region this year, with each boasting 39 entries. Peking University is tied for second place, while the University of Tokyo came in at 7th place.

Institutions from Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan are also prominent in the rankings, with the University of Hong Kong at 4th place, the Pohang University of Science and Technology at 8th place, and the National Taiwan University at 15th place.

The THE Asia University Rankings 2016 use the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, but recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions. According to THE, the universities are judged across all of their core missions—teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook—to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available.

This year’s table ranks 200 institutions from 22 countries, a twofold increase from 100 institutions in 14 countries last year. Additionally, several Asian countries, including Bangladesh and Indonesia, are being represented for the first time.
